Here is the updated list (by my count) of the matters the Court has decided since August 1, 2021 or ordered for later argument. You can see it below or view it in full screen by clicking on this tabbed GoogleSheet. (The full-screen link really is the way to go.)
Why August 1? The Court’s “term” runs from August 1 through July 31. If a “calendar case” (leave granted, not a MOAA) is not decided by July 31, parties can file supplemental briefs and re-argue the case in the next term. MCR 7.313(E).
File number counts are grouped into either the status:
- Decided during the 2021-22 term: 98 (57 by opinion, 41 by order)
- Argued during the 2021-22 term and await disposition (decision): 2 (probably 1 writing will issue)
- 2022-23 term argument expected: 67
Non-traditional stats:
The Court held 70 arguments during the 2021-22 term (by event, not docket number).
- 46 were remote.
- 24 were in-person.
The shortest argument was 10 minutes and 36 minutes. It was the in-person MOAA People v Jackson (162908).
The longest was the 1 hour, 41 minute, and 45-second remote argument in The Detroit News v Independent Citizens Redistricting Comm’n (163823).
The quickest disposition from oral argument to opinion or order was Foundation for Behavioral Resources v W.E. Upjohn Unemployment Trustee Corp. (161592): 1 day.
After the Court ordered argument and future briefing for the 2021-22 term files, it received and considered over 11,000 pages of briefing and over 25,000 pages of appendixes.
The Court volleyed back with over 1,700 pages of dispositive orders and opinions (with syllabi).
